Queensland Gas Company
QGC - a BG Group business - is a leading Australian coal seam gas explorer and producer focused on developing its world-class reserves for domestic and international supply.
The business, which was founded in 2000 as a junior explorer, employs more than 320 people in the development of gas projects including Queensland Curtis LNG - one of Australia's largest capital infrastructure projects.
Queensland is QGC's heartland. The business also holds interests in South Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania, in a total of more than 150,000 sq km of acreage.
QGC is strategically positioned to meet rising demand for its abundant coal seam gas, cleaner power and ample water. The strengths of the business are underpinned by Australian and Queensland government policy, firm long-term contracts, the move to cleaner, more efficient fuel sources and a planned national carbon trading scheme.
In February 2008, BG Group and QGC announced an alliance to co-operate in coal seam gas exploration and production, the development of domestic market opportunities and the construction of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility at Curtis Island off the coast of Queensland. In October 2008, QGC and BG Group reached agreement on a 100% acquisition of QGC.
QGC has dedicated a significant proportion of its fast-growing coal seam gas reserves to meeting Australia's energy needs. These reserves are projected to supply about 20% of Queensland's domestic gas market in 2009. QQC is scheduled to join the National Electricity Market in 2009 when the business will supply coal seam gas to its new 140 MW Condamine Power Station.
Strong and beneficial relationships have been established by QGC in the communities in which it operates. We respect our communities and neighbours, and strive to minimise the impact of operations on communities and the environment.
QGC invests in applications for large volumes of coal seam water, which has the potential to help drought-affected communities, towns and farms in the Surat Basin.
The business hosts and sponsors the award-winning Drama At The Gasfields, an annual family day featuring a production by La Boite Theatre Company at QGC's Windibri homestead near Chinchilla in southern Queensland.
The Queensland Curtis LNG Project is seeking approval to produce up to 12 million tonnes of LNG a year for export from Curtis Island, near Gladstone. The projects initially involves two production units, known as trains, each producing 7.5 million tonnes of LNG a year, a 380km pipeline from the gas fields to Gladstone, and significantly enhanced production from the reserves in the Surat Basin. About 4,400 new jobs are expected to be created over the lifetime of the project. A final investment decision for the Queensland Curtis LNG Project is anticipated in 2010, with first gas expected in late 2013.
